LASIK is one of the most popular elective procedures in North America. It involves a surgeon reshaping the corneal tissue at the front of the eye using an excimer laser. Most patients between the ages of 18 and 50 years of age with nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia) and astigmatism can be candidates for the procedure. Refractive lens exchange (RLE) is an alternative procedure that can correct your vision if you're not a candidate for LASIK. It involves a surgeon removing the natural lens inside the eye with a permanent artificial lens. RLE is often recommended for patients over the age of 50.
